This is a beautiful book both visually and in content. The watercolor illustrations are in the realistic style painted in fine detail. My daughter loves to look at the pictures closely as we read the poems aloud.
The poems selected cover a wide range of topics, themes, and moods. There are funny poems like limericks, serious poems about the seasons, poems about how children sometimes feel (such as the one about the boy who didn't do anything right yesterday, so he's not getting out of bed today) bedtime poems, and poems about child play.
This book was a gift and I love it so much I've since given it to other parents and children to enjoy. Everyone has been enthusiastic about it. When my daughter selects this book (which is often) it's fun for us to browse through the pages and pick poems based on the illustrations or on our mood. We'll say, let's read about sleepytime poems, or let's read funny poems. She never tires of this book. There are hundreds of poems to choose from, but the scope is not overwhelming either.
I give this book my highest recommendation. Every home should have some poetry on the shelf!

Such a beautiful book of poems on a wide variety of SUBJECTS . I love it and so does my granddaughter
This book was highly recommended by a coworker. Came in great used condition. Can't wait to read it to my babies!
I bought this book for my children when they were young. We spent many hours reading this together. Now my older daughter is having her first child, I purchased it for her. She's looking forward to creating new memories of her own.
Beautiful illustrations and fabulous poems
A lovely lap-reading book for little ones that should always be available in hardcover. This book was a joy to sell when I owned Little Red Lighthouse Children's Books in RI from 1993-2001. Jane Dyer's illustrations reflect the poetry selections perfectly. X.J. Kennedy was my 20th Century Poetry professor at Tufts University in 1964. At that time Sat. classes were common, but not popular. Prof. Kennedy's classes were filled, with students sitting outside open classroom windows just to listen to him. When introducing children to literature it is important to give them cloth and board books to handle, but also to read to them from special books that they learn to handle carefully. The Kennedys have a feel for the joy of poetry. Just as children respond to the rhyme, rhythm and fun of nursery rhymes, they will love these poetry selections. Those not familiar with X.J. Kennedy's poetry should check him out.
Beautiful, creative artwork and lovely little poems to keep my toddlers interested while hearing beautiful language. Don’t care for some of the selections or artwork (a witch on a broom for instance), but can easily edit these out.
Very interesting book of poetry -- my 5-year old boy loves it. It has a very funny poem about a peanut that he has memorized ( . . . and due to his frequent repetition we have all now memorized it). Some poems are by well-known poets (e.g., Emily Dickenson) but I would say most of them are by poets who specifically write for children. We had no idea such poetry was out there until this book.
