I give this book five stars because it was so delightful! I hadn't heard of this author before so I was apprehensive about starting it--sometimes clean cozy mysteries are really cheesy and frankly, totallylame. Not so with A Fool and His Monet! It hit all marks for me: it was a light-hearted, quick read with just enough romance to keep it interesting and had a mystery that wasn't too easily solved and seemed fairly well-researched. The zany cast of characters were endearing and I can't wait to dig deeper into the back story that was introduced. I had to buy book 2, Another Day, Another Dali, immediately after I finished it. Plus, the author is having a fun poll on which guy should win Serena's heart. (I don't want to bias anyone but...Tanner is clearly the one.) The love triangle is deftly handled--I'm not usually a fan but this one is fun.I would categorize this as a "clean" novel because Serena sometimes mentions praying and she goes to church but her faith is not an integral part to the story and there isn't an explicit gospel presentation. And that's not a complaint per se, just a description. It was a very fun story.

I really enjoyed this first mystery in the Serena Jones series. The catchy title is what first made me want to read the book. Serena is a FBI Special Agent investigating art thefts and frauds. She is a likable character with a close family, including her parents and incorrigible Aunt Martha who is very interested in Serena's work. There are two quite interesting men in Serena's life, though she doesn't date them or anyone else Tanner, who is her FBI training partner, and Nate, her apartment building manager. Serena's best friend, Zoe asks for her help when she discovers two priceless paintings are missing from the art museum where she works. The ensuing investigation has many twists and turns, plus some dangerous moments for Serena. I'm glad I have a copy of the next book so I can continue this series. The mystery in this one wrapped up well but we still have the continuing question will Serena fall for Tanner or Nate?
When FBI agent Serena Jones finally gets assigned to the Art Crime Team, she jumps in with both feet. Doggedly determined and resourceful, there’s more to her than meets the eye. She is fabulously flawed, claustrophobic, and still green around the edges. While she stubbornly follows clues and suspects, she is surrounded by handsome admirers including Tanner, “her former field-training agent” and Nate, her apartment superintendent, “two testosterone-pumped, would-be heroes competing” for her attention.” Her obsessive/compulsive tendencies lead to a bit of bumbling and danger but with the help of her family and friends the mystery is solved. “I’d been fooling myself to thing I could handle being an FBI agent.” As she searches for the art thief, she cannot forget the murder of her grandfather. This story contains a delightful cast of characters including best friend Zoe, zany Aunt Martha, Manny the Masher, and the neurotic Harold. Crazy antics, missteps, and false accusations round out the action with a touch of romance on the side. She may seem to be “in over her head” but it all works out in the end. A little discombobulated and haphazard, this is a fun who-dun-it reminiscent of “Get Smart.” After a slow start, the action ramped up along with Serena’s nerves. Throw in murder, secret agents, mobsters, and family drama, the plot felt rushed at times and as scattered as Serena but I enjoyed myself to the very last page. “I should’ve listened to my mother.”
Sandra Orchard's The Fool and His Monet has made my list as best, new, clean cozy series of 2016!! If you like clean, snarky, romantic cozies with a few wacky characters thrown in, it doesn't get any better than this!!
Serena Jones is a wet-behind-the-ears FBI agent. Her grandfather's murder propelled her into this field, but her love of art and justice, plus her zany aunt Martha keeps her going. Two paintings have disappeared from a friend's art museum. Mix together two hunky men who vie for Serena's attention, mobsters of the good and bad variety, plenty of suspense, laughter, and story line twists. The end result is a scrumptious cozy you will devour way too quickly, asking for seconds!! A new twist at the end I had personally never experienced before. Kudos, Sandra Orchard!!
This book has just the right amount of suspense for a crime novel, without dragging or going on about unnecessary details, but no excessive fear or action for the sake of spiking adrenaline either.
Clean in language and behavior, yet not prudish or religious, the action and plot are believable and interesting, with enough facts about the FBI and the art world to flesh out the story. The characters don't make stupid mistakes just to keep the story going, there are no disconcerting lapses of information to discredit the story, and I could not find any distracting grammatical or spelling mistakes.
Light romantic tension just adds to the book instead of taking over and eclipsing the crime action.
A Fool and His Monet is a stand alone book with a satisfying conclusion. I will buy the next in the series because I enjoyed the book, not because I was tricked into reading an unfinished cliffhanger.
Although I enjoyed the author's serious romantic suspense novels, I liked this book better. The art theft is the background for a series of numerous comments and situations involving a number of quirky and endearing characters. As one reviewer pointed out, in other hands it could have been a cheesy cozy trying to be funny. But Ms. Orchard has written a solid mystery with plenty of action and two potential love interests that just happens to also be very funny. Great read!
