Houston Houston Do You Read?/Souls Tor Double No 11 James Tiptree Jr Joanna Russ 9780812559620 Books

I love old sci fi from my younger days. If it seems unoriginal, it's because people have copied THEM. For example, Tiptree was one of the first to explore gender roles/issues. Some of her stuff was shocking in it's day. "Houston, Houston" is about men on a mission who accidentally find themselves in the future and men are no longer what they were used to.
"Souls" is a story of a 'watcher race' with an interesting plot, taking place in medieval times, with pillaging vikings and frightened religious folk.
I like these double books, I'm glad Tor is still publishing them, I actually discovered Tiptree in one 30+ years ago... a 2-fer deal, giving you access to novellas that one can usually only access in a magazine.

Houston Houston Do You Read?/Souls Tor Double No 11 James Tiptree Jr Joanna Russ 9780812559620 Books Reviews

(Review for "Souls", not "Houston, Houston, Do You Read?")

Interesting short, far more interesting for the conversational judo before the supernatural/science-fictional elements come in.

Think Galactic discussion notes[...]
("Houston, Houston", btw, is BRILLIANT.)
The following comments are for "Souls" by Joanna Russ.

The story, in summary, concerns Viking invaders in France of the middle ages and a charismatic nun who attempts to defend the villagers from harm. The nun turns out, or evolves in to, a supernatural being. This story resonated with this reader long after I put the book down. "Souls" by Joanna Russ (1937-2011) , was a Hugo winner and Nebula Award finalist in 1982, and is highly recommended.

I had previously read some of Ms Russ's fiction and was discontented that the focus was on polemics to the determent of the narrative. "Souls" put the focus on the narrative and won a prestigious award. I am from the school that believes if I put my money down to purchase a book of science-fiction then, by gosh, I want to be entertained not proselytize. I have no problem with the author sermonizing their beliefs no matter how far fetched or sincerely held but, damn it, wrap it around a good story! Heinlein was a master at this.

"Houston, Houston, Do you Read?" Winner of the Hugo and Nebula award in 1977. Mildly interesting story about men from the past confronting a very, very different future. Male characters were not very credible. Would NASA select a macho man, an over zealous preacher type and a laid back doctor on a space mission where they would be cooped up for a long period, hardly. Seems dated reading it in 2013 but must have wowed the award voters in 1977.
On the plus side, this only cost me a penny. One of the few books I have actually thrown in the trash. The Houston story is raunchy in parts, hyper stereo-typical characters, as someone already pointed out, and dated feminism--"The world would be so much better if not for men." Reminded me of the TV rendition of Dinotopia from several years back. I skipped to the end to see if there was anything redeeming. Instead I felt like I needed to scrub my brain by reading something else. I didn't read the Souls story, which is the reason for the extra star.
Powerful. It takes a while to understand exactly what is occurring, but the reveal is worth the wait! Definitely a must-read for anyone interested in gender issues. I am more than ready for the future that the story suggests!
I only read Tiptree (Sheldon)'s story before I loaned it out. I hear the other story is also worthwhile.
I've always greatly admired James Tiptree Jr so when offered this book by her cheap I snapped it up. If you like off-beat SciFi you should buy this if you haven't already. If not, why not?
considered classics of the genre, for good reason
glad to bet it
