I didn't intend to read it all at once. I bought this book to start on vacation and finish while recovering from surgery. Afterall; it's 448 pages, not a quick read for someone with heavy nose-sliding glasses like me. I lost sleep four nights in a row to get to the end.

If you don't know Judy Bernstein or Alepho Deng, you will by the time you reach the last page. They each had a story to tell and only by reading this book will you understand why. If you listen closely to their words and swallow the feelings they leave sticking to the back of your throat, they may supersede what you think you know about humanity.

I like the metaphor in the title. Both authors were 'disturbed in their nests,' arroused from the comfort of their own reality upon meeting and learning of each other's unfamiliar world. The two couldn't have been more different. A fair-skinned American mother with few worries and a tall dark African teenager who barely lived a day without anxiety or fear. Their collision of cultures cut a path so deep into their lives it steered them each in a new direction.

For those who enjoy memoirs...(because they make you feel and think and reflect), you won't be disappointed with this book. And if you haven't read, They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky, ( the detailed journey of the three lost boys) you should order that too.

But be warned...don't start either one until you're ready to burn the midnight oil!

Disturbed in Their Nests A Journey from Sudan Dinkaland to San Diego City Heights edition by Alephonsion Deng Judy A Bernstein Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

This book should be read by everyone who thinks they understand what life is like in war-torn third world countries. I didn’t have a clue. God bless those who have suffered and those who are still suffering. And, God bless those who reach out and give of themselves to make a difference.
This is one of those books that feels more like an experience. The kind where you are different at the end. The juxtaposition of two distinct, authentic voices provides a window into the human condition that I would not have experienced without reading this book. It struck me that somehow they made it look easy and that’s when I knew that this is pure literary gold. Truly stunning. You will want to share with your friends and buy a copy for your mom.
Judy’s journey with these Lost Boys through their acclimation to America was fascinating, at times humorous and also heart breaking. Kudos to you Judy for pushing through the difficult days. I am amazed at these boys’ strength, intelligence, and abilities to overcome so much... both in Sudan and in America. I learned a lot from reading these pages. Thank you all for this book.
This is a great book. Alternating chapters are written by the American mentor --a mom--and the Lost Boy. Each has a unique view. The mom is overwhelmed to learn what this Lost Boy has endured during his childhood. She is amazed to find out the difficulties new Americans face, and often doesn't have answers herself. But through trial and error, she advocates and helps to attack the boys' problems with energy and warmth. The boy is amazed at some American things we take for granted but also disappointed to learn he won't receive a pillow case full of money, as he was told in Africa. He moves through typical stages of cultural adjustment (excitement, depression,) but finally accommodation to American culture. He becomes more confident, and works hard to improve his life. Every newcomer should have an "American mom" or dad like this to help them out. The book is funny and touching. If you have ever helped a newcomer, you will find plenty to relate to here. If you haven't helped someone, but want to, you will have a great experience. Contact the refugee office in your area.
While this tender book tells the story of boys from Sudan, it is so relevant to the immigrant experience everywhere. Beautifully written, I could not put it down!
This book tells an important story from two very different perspectives about the refugee experience. Reading it helps one improve his/her ability to empathize.
Once I began this book I could not put it down. Beautifully written. What an adventure. A must read to truly understand what war can do to a person and how to overcome the madness.
