Ever since I've had a Kindle I've periodically checked Donald E Westlake, just in case. This author was not represented in the Kindle Store - but you never know. And then, last month, there they were : all the Dortmunder books!

There are a few I've not yet read, and obviously I'll start with those, but eventually I'll buy them all to cheer me up on rainy days because the few hard copies I have left are falling to bits.

Basically all the Dortmunder books can be covered by one review. There is sad, cynical Dortmunder, the planner of their burglaries, and his disaster prone crew (in character throughout, so nicely recognisable) attempting, or falling into the craziest "hits". Things go right, things go wrong, one thing leads inevitably to another in accordance with the charactarisation, the construction is clever the writing is good, witty, and often very, very funny.

In this book Dortmunder is in court having been caught red handed lifting television sets and surprise, surprise gets defended by a brilliant defence council who gets him off - appointed by a wealthy man who needs an art work stolen from himeself and has chosen Dortmunder as the optimum thief. That is the price, the downside being a hitman who will kill him (Dortmunder) if he fails. Well, I said it was crazy, didn't I?

Having accepted that the story flows oddly realistically. Read it, its great fun.
If you like this one you're a sure-fire candidate for the others. We're all in line for a bit of light relief every now and again. Try Why Me?

This book was funny and I really enjoyed the writing.
Another good one from Westlake. I would murder for a limitless supply of his novels.
I like this book. It is different than the usual Grisham & Patterson books I usually read. I think I now read all of the Dortmunder novels now. It started out as one of them were a special free book for kindle, but I bought the rest of the series
Plot too complicated . Goes on and on. He's written much better Dort books
if you have never read any Donald Westlake, you should start now. he's a classic and should be revered.
Dortmunder and his crew are contracted to steal a painting. It's the owner who wants the painting stolen so he can claim the insurance money. He sets everything up and cooperates with Dortmunder so what could possibly go wrong? If you have read any of the books in this series you will know the answer to that.

Good, fun, entertaining read as are all the others.
I've read about half a dozen of these Dortmunder novels and enjoyed all the others more than this one. I haven't been reading them in order and this is the earliest one that I've read, so perhaps it took a while for the author to perfect his style. The central cast of characters carries over from earlier books, but I haven't found that to be a problem when reading them in random order. I did enjoy parts of this book but, as another reviewer mentioned, the plot disintegrates at the end. I can strongly recommend the later books, but not this one.
